Healdsburg & Northern Sonoma: Wine Region Guide

Three legendary AVAs — Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley — all centered around one of California's best wine towns.

By Destination Drivers · Updated 2026 · 8 min read

Northern Sonoma combines rustic charm with world-class wine. Anchored by the town of Healdsburg, this subregion covers three legendary AVAs — Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley — each with its own distinct microclimate, soils, and signature grapes.

What Makes This Region Special

Alexander Valley

One of Sonoma's warmest AVAs. Deep alluvial soils. Known for rich, plush Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dry Creek Valley

Gravelly, loamy soils. Warm, dry climate. California's heartland for old-vine Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc.

Russian River Valley

Heavy marine fog influence. Extended cool growing season. Goldridge sandy loam prized for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Signature Grapes to Try

Zinfandel — Dry Creek Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon — Alexander Valley
Pinot Noir & Chardonnay — Russian River Valley
Sauvignon Blanc — Dry Creek Valley

Three Wineries Worth the Drive

No. 1

Ridge Vineyards – Lytton Springs

Dry Creek Valley

A historic vineyard first planted in the late 1800s, Ridge's Lytton Springs estate is a benchmark for old-vine Zinfandel. Their blends often include Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Mourvèdre. Sustainable architecture, sweeping vineyard views, and wines built to age.

Don't miss the Lytton Springs Zinfandel — layered, spicy, and complex in a way that only old vines can produce.

No. 2

Jordan Vineyard & Winery

Alexander Valley

A standout for elegant, Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Their hilltop chateau overlooks 1,200 acres of vineyards, gardens, and lakes. The experience is refined and unhurried — one of the best in Northern Sonoma.

The Jordan Cabernet is balanced with red currant, cedar, and silky tannins. Reservations are required and worth making well in advance.

No. 3

Rochioli Vineyards & Winery

Russian River Valley

A cult favorite for serious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their single-vineyard selections are rare and revered, and the tasting patio lets you sip in view of the exact vines your wine came from.

Reserve tasting required — worth planning ahead for. Their West Block and Little Hill single-vineyard Pinots are among the most sought-after wines in California.
